More than 84,000 patients are seen in Detroit Receiving's emergency department (ED) each year, with approximately 25% requiring hospital admission. The ED also serves as medical control for pre-hospital care in southeastern Michigan and houses a base station telemetry unit to facilitate communication with Detroit Emergency Medical Services. The ED is currently undergoing a $20 million renovation, expected to be completed in 2004.
In 2001, Detroit Receiving's ED ranked among the top emergency rooms in metropolitan Detroit, according to a poll of nearly 170,000 households, conducted by National Research Corporation (NRC), a national leader in healthcare performance measurement and the market research industry.
Current, the patient care space in the ED is comprised of three functional areas: the acute care area, ambulatory care reception center and observation care unit. The acute care area is composed of four modules (each with 8 patient bays, 2 of which are critical care beds), an emergency medicine observation unit (EMO) for which we utilize our observation medicine protocols (3 patient bays, all monitored), a resuscitation suite (3 critical care bays), an individual pelvic examination room, an orthopedic cast room, a STAT laboratory, a 4 room x-ray suite, a CT scan suite, and a satellite pharmacy.
The ambulatory reception center is adjacent to the acute care area and contains 5 individual examination rooms, an eye room with a slit lamp, and a holding room with 1 stretcher and an ENT examination chair. The observation care unit is located down a hallway from the acute care area and is an 18-bed unit which includes 3 telemetry patient bays and an isolation room.
A separate area, maintained for emergency psychiatry care, is staffed around the clock by psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses. The total number of beds is 89, including 11 critical care beds, 3 emergency medicine observation unit beds with telemetry capabilities, and 3 observation care unit beds with cardiac monitoring capability. Approximately 230 patients are seen in a 24-hour period throughout the entire emergency department.
Detroit Receiving has a long history and strong tradition of training physicians in emergency medicine (EM). In 1976, before EM was recognized as a specialty, DRH began a postgraduate EM training program.
