Detroit Receiving Hospital Palliative Care Service

Here when you need us most Care, Comfort, Privacy. We're here for you.

Margaret L. Campbell, RN, PhD, FAAN, and Michal Stellini, M.D., M.S.

It is never easy to learn that a loved one has a terminal illness or injury. But knowing that Detroit Receiving Hospital has one of the first hospital-based palliative care services in the country may help ease the burden.

Detroit Receiving's Palliative Care Service focuses on providing comprehensive care to patients and their families, after the diagnosis of a terminal illness or injury. Established specifically to help families facing end of life issues, our palliative care program provides the additional comfort and support during this transitional period.

Our palliative care service is staffed by nurse practitioners who work in collaboration with staff physicians to ensure the best patient care. Our team cares for patients on any unit, throughout the hospital, and can be reached any time of the day or night.

We Focus on Our Patients and Their Families

We know this can be a time of uncertainty and discomfort for our patients. The palliative care program works to provide the highest level of comfort and care to our patients. The program focuses on patient symptom management to minimize patient discomfort and suffering.

The program also emphasizes privacy for patients and their families. Patients are moved into private rooms, allowing for more personal and uninterrupted communication with family and friends.

We understand that end of life issues affect the entire family, so our team also works to help families cope. Families of palliative care patients have unrestricted visiting, including small children. We also interact with other hospital departments, providing access to our spiritual care team and social workers, to offer counseling as needed.

Detroit Receiving's Palliative Care Service can provide additional assistance, referring patients and families to community resources and other agencies, including hospice care, as necessary.
