Patient Care Services Education

Philosophy

We believe that learning is a lifelong process. Teaching is a part of DRH’s core. With a commitment to excellence and high-quality patient care, education is provided to ensure that patient care at DRH is evidence based. From patient education to staff mentoring and relationship building, we are dedicated to leveraging the skills and knowledge of our nurses by providing the necessary tools to achieve success throughout DRH.  Staff development involves educating the whole person to help them reach their full potential. We are dedicated to developing a culture that maximizes the talents of staff by providing them with opportunities for growth and development for years to come.

Orientation

For every nurse, professional development begins with DMC New Employee Orientation, followed by a comprehensive, week long nursing orientation, highlighting a full range of skills, responsibilities, expectations, and competencies, including training in the electronic medical record (EMR) and BLS.  Specialized orientation is provided for critical care, emergency department and operating room nurses.

Ongoing Education

Education for nurses continues throughout the year with skill validation classes, classroom and unit-based inservices, CE programs, monthly grand rounds, journal clubs, BLS and ACLS provider and instructor courses.

Continuing Education

The DMC is approved by the Michigan Nurses Association as a provider of CE programs, allowing DRH nurse planners to review and approve programs for CE credit. DRH nurses have many opportunities to earn CE credit on site, making it convenient to earn the 25 CE hours required for licensure by the state of Michigan. In 2008, over 30 evidence-based presentations for contact hours were provided for DRH nurses.  More than 350 nurses participated earning over 230 contact hours.

Journal Clubs

Journal clubs are presented monthly, and are consistent with the topic presented in Nursing Grand Rounds. During journal club, nurses identify principles and evidence presented by the author, evaluate the strength of the evidence, compare nursing practice at DRH with the evidence in the article, and identify how the evidence could be translated into practice at DRH.

Certification

Certification is highly encouraged at DRH and we are proud to boast of over 100 certified nurses. We provide the resources nurses need to become certified, including access to specialty specific review books, CDs and other materials for exam preparation. Nurses receive reimbursement for the cost of certification exams.
