The Rosa Parks Geriatric Center
at Detroit Receiving Hospital

Part of the DMC Geriatric Center of Excellence

The Rosa Parks Geriatric Center is dedicated to servicing the health needs of adults 60 and older. The Health Center team, led by Dr. Lavoisier Cardozo, the Detroit Medical Center’s director of geriatrics, is comprised of board-certified geriatric specialty physicians, certified nurse practitioners and geriatric medicine professors. Each team member is experienced in working with older adults, and is committed to understanding the patient’s needs.  Through a multidisciplinary approach, the Center provides comprehensive primary care, and also focuses on those conditions common to seniors, including depression, heart disease, memory loss, high blood pressure and diabetes.

In addition to primary care, the Center offers care in the areas of cardiology and psychiatry, as well as diagnostic testing.  This wide variety of programs and health services is designed to help patients over the age of 60 maximize their health. In addition, the center conducts research on issues related to aging, trains health care Senior Health Center Provides Specialized Care professionals to become leaders in geriatric care and ethnogeriatrics, and provides comprehensive clinical and support services.

Additional senior services include registered nurses available by phone, 24-hours a day, to discuss health conditions and possible emergencies, and free counseling regarding access to community services.

Detroit Receiving's expertise in geriatric care is also provided on an inpatient basis for patients with acute care needs.  The Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to provide comprehensive care to senior patients admitted to Receiving.

The Rosa Parks Geriatric Center is part of the DMC’s Geriatric Center of Excellence, which is designed to provide comprehensive services to the growing population of seniors in the Metro area. The Geriatric Center of Excellence improves senior health care through education, research, clinical programs and community partnerships.
