5U Shows its Holiday Heart

February, 2003

Late last year, the members of DRH's geriatric unit, 5U, offered a special gift to their patients. They understood how their patients felt, being hospitalized so near the holidays. Many were separated from family and loved ones, feeling isolated during what should be one of the most joyous times of year.

So in an inspiring demonstration of patient care and commitment, 5U held a Christmas party December 18th for patients on the ACE (acute care for the elderly) unit. The party was initiated and hosted by the 5U team, each person contributing to the event's success. The party's festivities included gifts, Christmas carols and even a visit from Santa Claus.

"The staff really got into it," said Theresa Fernandez, 5U unit manager. "It was an opportunity to show our patients how much we care, but it also was a celebration of the great team we have here. And knowing how much the party meant to our patients made it that much more special to us."

The patients were overjoyed-some coming close to tear-by the gesture and the thoughtfulness of the staff. To our friends on 5U, your team shows us that patient care extends beyond medical treatment. Thank you for representing the DRH team so well.
