Burn Unit Nurse Offers Ray of Hope

February, 2003

As with any critical care unit, working as part of the burn unit team can be challenging. But like most DRH team members, Sylvia Van Der Kooy Kempl doesn't let the challenges overwhelm her.

"Sylvia has been apart of the Burn Center for about ten years," said Tonya Davis-Kennedy, unit manager. "She started as a student from Wayne State and she remained after she graduated. Sylvia is a devoted member of the team and she always has a beautiful smile to share with her teammates."

"Sylvia is a treasure for the hospital," echoed Dr. Robert Wilson. "She works hard, but stays upbeat and optimistic. She's always pleasant to our patients and their families, helping to build a good rapport between them and our staff."

When it comes to DRH team members like Sylvia, it may be difficult to point out the one special thing worth noting, because it's more than one action on one given day that makes them special. It's the consistently positive attitude, the ongoing willingness to help and the unwavering dedication to our patients day after day, year after year, that make Sylvia an important part of the Burn Center, as well as DRH.
