Employees Go Beyond the Call

July, 2002

We know we have dedicated team members here at Receiving, who understand that, at times, you have to stretch beyond your daily responsibilities to help patients, visitors and coworkers. These are the people who make our hospital special. Here, we touch upon three staffers who exhibit that level of commitment every day.

Kurt Scherer, orthopaedic cast technician, is a pleasure to work with and offers additional assistance to patients and visitors whenever possible, according to Vivian McGillis, manager of the ortho department.

Kurt exhibited his customer service focus a few weeks ago, when an ortho patient was being admitted to DRH. The patient required wheelchair transportation to the unit, and his grandmother, tired from the walk from the ortho clinic UHC, also needed a wheelchair. Before Kurt could transport the pair, he noticed another ortho patient who was a bit lost, trying to get to Children's (CHM). Kurt kindly escorted that patient to CHM, and returned to take the first patient and his grandmother up to the ortho unit in two separate trips. This was certainly outside the scope of Kurt's responsibilities, but what a great service to these patients.

Commitment to the DRH team is also demonstrated behind the scenes. Jerri Tolliver and Anh-Thu Wright-Reamey are shining bright on the radiology team, says Dianna Jackson, supervisor of diagnostic imaging. During the past few weeks, the department has been short-staffed, with two employees out on maternity leave and others taking vacation time. Tolliver, lead ultrasonographer, and Wright-Reamey, staff ultrasonographer, are the only techs currently working the ultrasound department, going the extra mile to ensure coverage. Because of their dedication to their department and their jobs, patients in need of ultrasounds are right on schedule.
